Students shout slogans during a protest against the racial attacks on Indian students in Australia, in New Delhi.

Australia’s Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Evans, on Friday met representatives from the Indian community in Melbourne to listen directly to their views on the racial attacks involving Indian students.

The Minister reassured the Indian community that the Australian Government welcomes students from India and values their decision in coming to Australia to further their studies.

Australia is a tolerant, multicultural society that prides itself on its diversity and the Rudd Government takes very seriously Australia''s reputation as a safe destination for international students seeking high quality education, Evans said.

Nearly 500,000 international students were enrolled in Australian institutions last year, including more than 90,000 students from India.

“All Australians have been shocked and appalled by reports of violence against international students. Such attacks will not be tolerated and the Rudd Government has joined community leaders in condemning these crimes,” the minister said.

Evans reassured the community representatives that the reporting of incidents to police would not impact on the visa status of international students.

Australian Prime Minister has established a Taskforce on Crimes Against International Students under the leadership of the National Security Adviser to coordinate action across all levels of government.

Steps have already been taken to increase protection for the student community including increased police operations and public safety information sessions.

Look beyond your noseBy: Dr. A. K. Biswas | 09-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Anil Kohli and his ilks need to read a recent piece in Indian media by Rakesh Sinha, who is an Indian-Australian in diplomatic service. His paper spoke plainly why Indian students are misfit in Oz as they lack social conditioning. Practically they are misfit everywhere outside India for their attitudional monstrocity shaped by their culture and scriptures. If charity begins at home, so does attitudional moulding. Columbia University Professor of Anthropology E Valentine Daniel says, "some Indian executives will not hire untouchables, no matter how good their qualifications." UK has been struggling hard how to put down the menace of caste bedevilling the social fabric there.Indians want to practice abraod what they do to others for generations at home.Oz is just an exemple of that. They ave invited their own misery.See snow on your roof before, dear sir, you point finger to someone else's roof.Show sensitivity to others feelings first.
MrBy: HNS | 25-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward I do not beleive the reduction of Indian or foreign students will enhance the chance of Australians having a higher education. The number of Australians getting higher education will depend on the number of them wanting or qualify for such education. Please also understand as the foreign students pay tution they deserve to be protectected and looked after. More, importantly as the education providers get paid fees by foreign students, that way the quality and consistency is also ensured of the Australian higher education system and also ensures that 'Australian Kids' also have a better chance and quality in education. It is a simple matter of economics
Maybe you should go home to India.By: Sick of Indian Abuse | 22-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Seeing as how Indians are incapable of surviving in the violent, dangerous and highly racist country called Australia, no doubt you would be better off going home. That way Australian kids can be free to enjoy access to their own education system, without having it bled dry to suit rude foreigners. It would also mean that our stupid and lazy police might go back to protecting the whole community, rather than just a bunch of whingers who come wanting a free ride to wealth. By the way, these comments do not apply to my good Indian mates who bother to fit in and contribute to this country, but then, they are a small minority in a vaste horde of now unwelcome pests. Why unwelcome? Australia has gone to great lengths to help
AUSTRALIABy: DANDY | 20-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward INDIAN CALL THEIR OWN PEOPLE AS UNTOUCHABLE,DALITS,THOTIES SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THEIR WORK SO THIS IS A PUNISHMENT THEY GET FOR THIS WHEN THEY ARE IN THE WEST.COME ON IN THE WEST YOU CLEAN TOILET FOR HARD CURENCY BUT IN INDIA THESE ABOVE MENTIONED PEOPLE DO DIRTY JOB ALSO FOR MONEY.SO WHY DISCRIMINATE??????IS THIS THE CULTURE YOU TALK ABOUT TO FOREIGNERS???????DO YOU KNOW THE CASTE OF YOUR MOTHER INDIA GO AND ASK IN NEPALES(ITALY)HER BIRTH PLACE THEM VOMIT.HA HA HA
Fools bluffBy: joseph george | 20-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward I did 2 years of college in Australia before moving to the states myself. Unspoken suttle racism in every day life in campus or outside was a common practice. Ten years back most of the racial taunts were directed at Japanese or Chinese migrants. It was also the norm to expect racial taunts in public places. If these event never made the press then the Government or the police would have never acknowledged the problem. It is very obvious that from the OZ PM down it has been denial and blaming the students by calling them "soft targets". All these meetings are symbolic gestures to attract you hard earned money. I would not buy this bluff unless they introduce zero tolerance laws and change the sentecing laws for minors. If you can harm a person or kill a person then you deserve to serve time. The hooligans are free to roam the street and do more curry bashing.
