Oz rules force foreign students to become 'economic slaves'

  • Businesses across Australia are exploiting thousands of international students by making them work free or even to pay to get work, as the current immigration and education laws in the country require students to gain 900 hours’ of work experience.

Termed by experts as economic slavery, the vast pool of unpaid labour was created in 2005 when vocational students were required to work even if they were not paid.

Overseas students remained bound to the system as completion of such courses became a near-guaranteed pathway to permanent residency, The 'Sydney Morning Herald' reports.

Since then, the number of foreign students enrolled in the vocational training sector has leapt from 65,120 to 173,432 last year - about half of all our overseas students.

One university-educated overseas student said that she spent 22,000 dollars and two years doing a hairdressing course she will never use, to secure her residency.

Many colleges charge students thousands of dollars in "placement fees" only to advertise their supply of free labour to local business. A black market has sprung up in fraudulent letters of completion.

"You've got the agents and the proprietors realising there is a flood of free labour, but of course the demand for placements outstrips the supply - so even if they wanted to take all that free labour, they can't use it all," said immigration agent, Karl Konrad.

A trade in fraudulent documents had evolved with employers and agents selling students verification that they had completed their 900 hours. They charge between 15,000-20,000 dollars for such paperwork.

No One asked indians to go to Oz for slaveryBy: shiju | 16-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward I dont agree with cause of this report, No one is forcing indian students to go there and do slavery, If a person is qualified as per the Australian immigration law it is possible to get PR straight away, most of indians try to find short cut to get PR,Hair dressing courses are on of that. Why dont we make india a better world, then doing slavery in some ones's country. No one want to do that especially our Polticians.
Indian students in AustraliaBy: august | 16-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Internship is a precious gift for a freshman/woman,completing their studies/doctrate.To join the workforce, even unpaid, offers them a first hand experience with, people skills and human relationships, hands on work experience that would serve them for future. To deny them this priviledge through protests and processions is downright stupid and silly.
Australian government a half a century behind the US on this issueBy: Hary Nambiar | 16-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Aussi government deserves the blame for all that violence, which seem to have originated from this policy. They ought to know what is happening in their industry, labor market and to the student population. If they do nothing to correct, it seems to me that the practice has the blessings of the government. There is a clear indication that the government, private industry, universities and the unscrupulous agents are hand in hand in this venture, which is a shame. If it is in the USA, the government will close that business down until they pay compensation to the victims. Yet, private business and individuals do take advantage of poor people, but only to a certain extent. If one has initiative, is employable and works hard, employers in USA will pay appropriate wages and do not victimize this way. Indian government must also wake up and make policies to avoid student exploitation abroad. Creating a database and keeping data on students going abroad is not a big deal.
money put to good useBy: aussie rules | 16-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward rather than they mortgage their house or land for hefty amount of fees to study in australia where it would take them a lifetime to pay back the loan, they should look at cheaper alternative on neighbouring countries that are much more cheaper in tuition fees and cost of living. But the indians chose the shortcut method, that is to run away from poverty in their own country and created another form of poverty for themselve in a foreign land by enslaving themselve. Its like getting out from lion den into a crocodile swamp! They are mot improving their life in long term as collective society of their own ethnic group, be it in India or outside India.
Slavery in Oz By: debut | 16-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Earlier racially motivated attacks on Indian `students' seems to be connected to `economic slavery.900 hours of `work experience' seems legally sanctioned in 2005.`Students' who were organizing earlier came under direct violent attacks. This was used to force them to submit. What can a government do which itself has legally sanctioned such practices ? `Student' looks like an euphemism alluring the gullible and unemployed at home. They obviously know that labour market is not only global but getting more so.Besides low population in Australia means higher demand for labour.
