While sweet shops and bakery sellers have already announced increased sales during the festive period,it is now the packaging industry’s turn to do the same. The packagers say the demand for gifts has increased by 20 per cent and with all major brands working to improve their presentation,it is the packaging industry that is reaping the benefits.
Parveen Aggarwal, the owner of a packaging factory said, We have made boxes for chocolates, biscuits, cakes for many brands and packings for Lays,Kurkure and many other companies. And our supply is 20 per cent more than last year. The response was good this Raksha Bandhan itself,so the expectations were high for Diwali as well”.
This time, the companies focused more on attractive gift packing that doesn’t require wrapping. Aggarwal said: The wrapping should be avoided because they cannot be recycled and cause environmental hazards once they are thrown in heaps by consumers”. The film-based wrappings choke sewer lines and even if burnt result in air pollution, thus spoiling the festive mood after the festival,he added.
Newsline team checked a gift wrapping shopkeeper on Pakhowal road and he said, Since morning more than 20 bundles of gift wraps have been consumed. This amounts to great business for us”.
