Barely 24 hours after it refused to take action against Padamsinh Patil, the Osmanabad MP who was arrested in connection with a double murder case, the NCP on Wednesday made an about turn and suspended him from the partys primary membership.
The NCP firmly believes in setting the highest standards of probity in public life and that the law should take its own course, Praful Patel,Chairman of the Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC),announced here on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, party general secretary D P Tripathi had rejected demands for action against Padamsinh arguing that the NCP believed he was innocent, like any undertrial, until he is proven guilty in a court of law. Patel said that the NCP believed in setting high ideals in public life and therefore, the party was dissociating itself from Patil.
It is a personal matter between him and the CBI. The party has nothing to do with it. In public and political life,a precedent has to be set. He has been arrested and has to face legal action. If he proves himself innocent, the NCP will have no objection to revoking his suspension, he said.
