Paddy procurement problems remain unresolved

Despite the state government’s claim of having completed arrangements for paddy procurement,Ahrtiyas or commission agents and truck unions say old problems are yet to be resolved.

Despite the state government’s claim of having completed arrangements for paddy procurement,Ahrtiyas or commission agents and truck unions say old problems are yet to be resolved. Ahrityas claim they have not been alloted rice shellers, while truckers say they are yet to be paid for the last season. Paddy is expected to come in mandis from October 1.

The truck unions and Ahrtiya union of district Ferozepur have sent complaints to Deputy Commissioner S Karuna Raju.

“Every year, allotment of rice shellers for storing the paddy is done once mandis are full with paddy. For the past many years,we had been asking for advance allotment but nothing has been done even this time as well,” Nand Kishore Gugan, president of Ferozepur Ahrtiya Union, said.

“Transport charges from Mallanwala mandi, the focal point, are Rs 29 per quintal, which is 2 km away from Ferozepur Cantonment. However, charges from Ferozepur Cantonment are only Rs 5 per quintal. The same is for Ferozepur city as well. Due to disparity in charges, lifting from city mandis is done in the end. The charges need to be revised,” he said.

Problem is the same in all city mandis of Punjab where charges are less compared with those in focal points.
