Padho Punjab: Amritsar gets back on the track

After trailing in implementation of Padho Punjab,an initiative for enhanced learning programme to promote reading, learning and numerical skills of primary school children,Amritsar district has made excellent progress to make the scheme a success. The program has managed 53 per cent progress in languages and 42.7 percent in maths in 843 government primary schools. During academic year 2008-09,the district attained merely 14 per cent marks in languages and 12.4 per cent in maths. More than 90,000 children in the district have benefited from the programme.

The district was trailing at the 20th position in state till November,2009. The consistent poor performance forced the district administration to look into the lapses and initiate immediate remedial measures.

“Special efforts were made in the form of rationalisation of the number of teachers in each school, continuous monitoring and checking, distribution of schools among Cluster Master Trainers,Block Master Trainers and Block Elementary Education Officers (CMTs,BMTs and BEEOs),and making them responsible for the performance of  the schools under them, arranging extra classes for students after school and on holidays,” said DC K S Pannu.

Pannu said written explanations were sought from schools with results below 30 per cent. As a result, performance in March,2010 showed a marked improvement due to the accountability enforced. The programme is finally back on its track and the district attained 11th position in the state for performance in languages and maths.

The DC said the results had been achieved despite nearly 40 single teacher schools in the district. “If the vacant posts of teachers are filled in the primary schools,we can work wonders,” he added.
