Three days after a freak accident on a highway in Southwest Delhi, in which a Swift hit a divider, somersaulted in the air and fell on top of an Indica, crushing the cab driver inside, the police have been unable to ascertain the exact cause.
The case has now been transferred to the “District Accident Cell” in Dwarka, which was exclusively set up three months ago to investigate fatal accident cases. The cell will now recreate graphically the scene of crime to ascertain why the Swift car swerved and hit the divider before flying in the air.
On Sunday, the deceased, Harpreet Singh (34), had gone to the airport to drop a passenger and was on his way back when the accident took place at 9.28 pm on the road leading to the Dwarka-Palam flyover. It took two hours and the combined effort of the Delhi Metro, the Delhi Police and the Delhi Fire Service to cut through the debris and recover Harpreet’s body.
The police later established from the skid marks that the Swift, which was on the other side of the divider, was speeding (100 to 120 kmph).
After the accident, the Swift driver, Manish Kumar, slipped out of the car, hailed an autorickshaw and got admitted in a local hospital. His relatives later shifted him to a private nursing home in New Friends Colony.
“Kumar’s medical tests don’t indicate that he was intoxicated. A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered against him in Delhi Cantonment police station. He sustained serious injuries in the accident and is recuperating. He will be placed under arrest after he gets discharged from the hospital,” a senior police official said.
