Adding to the poll eve woes of the state unit of the Congress, senior leader T H Musthafa, the second accused in the palmolein case,on Friday dragged the name of Opposition leader Oommen Chandy into the scam.
In a discharge petition filed in the Vigilance and Enquiry Court,Musthafa, who had been the Civil Supplies Minister at the time of import in 1992,said the prosecution did not find any fault with the then finance minister Chandy, but made him (Musthafa) an accused in the case.
Musthafa,a loyalist of the late leader K Karunakaran, had been the civil supplies minister and Chandy,a confidant of A K Antony, had been the finance minister at the time of the import in 1992. Both had been at loggerheads in the then Congress ministry.
In the petition,Musthafa said when the proposal for the palmolein import came up before,he had in writing suggested to put up the matter before the Cabinet. Except to that,I had done nothing so as to implicate me in the case. My suggestion was endorsed by finance minister Oommen Chandy. The matter was referred to the Cabinet. The prosecution which did not find any fault with the finance minister, unjustly arraigned me as an accused in the corruption case, said Musthafa in the petition which sought exception from the trial.
