A Block Development Committee (BDC) member was injured and his driver Komal Yadav killed when they were attacked in Deoria's Mayil area on Saturday afternoon.
Rajesh Yadav, BDC member from Bhagalpur block in Deoria and a Samajwadi Party worker, was returning to Bagalpur in a Bolero when they were attacked. Rajesh, a history-sheeter, was rushed to hospital.
The police suspect the attack was a fallout of the panchayat election. Additional Superintendent of Police, Deoria, Dinesh Pal Singh said they are working on various angles.
Station Officer, Mayil police station, Upendra Nath Rai said that when Rajesh's car reached Bhagalpur crossing, three people on a motorcycle stopped in front of the Bolero.
When the vehicle came to halt, the trio shot Komal point blank on the head. They then opened fire on Rajesh. Rajesh and his associates also fired on the attackers, Rai added.
SP Deoria district president Ram Iqbal Yadav confirmed that Rajesh was an SP worker and had unsuccessfully contested the block pramukh election from Bhagalpur during panchayat polls. Rajesh lost to one Sugendi Devi.
Ram Iqbal added that on August 30, Sugendi Devi lost the no-confidence motion and was removed from the post.
Three-days later the district magistrate appointed Sub-divisional Magistrate, Barhag, Tribhuvan Vishkarma to look after the work of block pramukh till further election.
It was on Rajesh's initiative that the no-confidence motion was passed and voting took place, Ram Iqbal added.
