Panchkula education officer to seek reasons from schools for poor performance in exams

With schools in Panchkula district performing poorly in the Class X and XII examinations — conducted by the Board of School Education,Haryana — the district education officer (DEO) will seek an explanation from the principals of the concerned schools.

DEO Nalini Mimani will write to all the schools that have a pass percentage below 50 per cent. “ I am writing to the principals for an explanation on the poor performance,” she told Chandigarh Newsline.

There are 29 schools in the district which a passing rate below 50 per cent in the Class X exams; with 17 in Pinjore block,three in Barwala ,four in Morni and five in Raipur Rani block.

The overall pass percentage in the district,according to office of the DEO,was 56.62 per cent,12.2 per cent lower than that of last year. The Government High School at Manak Tabra in Raipur Rani block achieved a 20 per cent pass percentage in the Class X exam,the worst in the district,with only four students out of 20 having passed. The Government High School at Maranwala,which comes in Pinjore block,is the second worst procuring a 23.75 pass percentage with 61 out of 80 student failing the exam .In the Class XII results,that were declared on Thursday,the district has achieved a 71.08 pass percentage which is 21.63 percent lower than that of last year. The Government Senior Secondary School,Sector 6,Panchkula scored 34.58 pass percentage with 70 students failing out of a total of 107.

Blaming students for poor results,Principal Urmil Devi explained,“ We get lot of students from slums. They do part time jobs also and are not able to focus on studies. If we call their parents,they do not turn up. Teachers were busy with census duties and other things. It all contributed to poor results.” Sushila Khokhar,principal of Government High School,Sector 17,said: “ We get students from Indira and Rajiv colonies. Two of my teachers were transferred in December,which also affected the results.”
