In order to do away with the cumbersome process of manually switching on and off streetlights,the administration has decided to install solar switches across the township.
Brain child of Deputy Commissioner Ashima Garg,the project will be outsourced by the administration to an external agency and is likely to cost around Rs 5 lakh. The administration is likely to invite tenders by August and the solar switches would find their way to the lights by the end of September.
The chances of the men deployed for the task erring are higher as they may miss switching on or off lights. We have also been receiving complaints where people rue that lights in their area have either not be switched on after dusk or continue to light well into afternoon. The plan would help handle this problem as well, she said. She further added that the township needed to advance technologically and installing solar switches was a step in this regard. Explaining this,she said that each streetlight would have a solar switch to its own which would automatically switch on during sunset and switch off in the morning.
Till now,it was a manual job in which personnel use to go around the town switching on lights during the dusk and switching off the same at the daybreak. Sources in the administration informed that there were around 50 men especially involved in the task.
