Three months after he was expelled from the CPI (Maoist), rebel leader Sabyasachi Panda on Wednesday escaped being killed by the Orissa Police even as five of his associates were killed in an encounter.
Ganjam SP Ashis Kumar Singh said the encounter occurred at around 10.30 am near Bhaliapada village on the border of Ganjam and Gajapati districts. The police claimed Panda was injured in the encounter. Two SOG personnel have also been injured.
Panda's wife Mili said the encounter reflected state government's attitude in dealing with rebels. "They just want to be trigger-happy. First they say Sabyasachi can surrender and then they attack him," Mili said.
