The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will start a project to provide recycled water to industries in Pandesara in the city in the coming days. Under this initiative,the SMC plans to supply 90 Million Litres per Day (MLD) potable water to the industries in the industrial area under Private Public Partnership (PPP) scheme. Currently,the corporation supplies 50 MLD potable water to textile industries in Pandesara. At a pre-bidding meeting,representatives of 17 companies,most of them having foreign collaboration,showed interest in carrying out the project. The Asian Development Bank Pvt Sector Operations Ltd has been engaged as consultants for legal,financial,technological and environmental aspects of the project. Under the project,the waste water will be treated to tertiary level at Pandesara Sewage Treatment Plant and supplied to the industries. The bidding process for the project is on and the last date of submission of the bids is on September 15. The majority of the companies involved in the bidding are Indian companies with foreign collaborations. Surat Municipal Commissioner S. Aparna said,SMC makes good money from the water supplied to the industries. We have informed the Standing Committee members and the Mayor about this project. We will provide the companies land to set up their infrastructure for the project. He said it is premature to say what benefits SMC will get out of the project.
