Panel lifeline for two TV channels owned by Saradha

The Calcutta High Court today set up a three-member committee to run two TV channels owned by the Saradha group.

Saradha group CMD Sudipta Sen had written a letter to the channels Tara News and Tara Muzic on April 14 stating that his group would be unable to run them.

Hearing a plea filed by the channels employees,Justice I P Mukherjee set up a committee comprising Atri Bhattacharjee,secretary of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department,Justice Maharaja Singha,a retired judge of the Calcutta High Court,and Aloke Mukherjee,a corporate representative. The committee was asked to run the two channels under the supervision of the High Court.

The Saradha Group had purchased the TV channels more than two years ago. After Sen expressed his inability to run them,167 employees formed an association and approached the court to allow them to run the channels. They also approached the state government for support. The employees mentioned that they had not got their salary for the last three months.

Government pleader Ashoke Banerjee apprised the High Court that the channels had enough funds to run for six months. The channels would be run properly by professionals,he added.
