Months after the Tata Motors withdrew from the small car project in Singur, the State Commission for Women plans to prepare a proposal concerning alternative modes of livelihood for those women, who were to be employed under the project.

“On December 16, we had visited Singur to meet women representatives from across the region,” said Malini Bhattacharya, chairperson of the Commission.

The proposal will especially focus on those who had been a part of the Tata project and were provided training in sewing, food-vendoring and glove-making. “Apart from the women who have received training at the site, we have spoken to a group who were waiting for the government compensate them for the land they had given up and another one that had refused to part with their land. We also spoke to a group whose land was not suitable for agriculture,” said Roma Das, Commission vice-chairperson. The team had surveyed 150 women representatives from areas including Bajemelia, Gopal Nagar, Khasher Bheri and Kamarkundu.
