Dissatisfied with the Panjab University (PU) authorities for not doing much to allow the Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSC) president to participate in the Senate proceedings, various students outfits on the campus are mulling to submit memorandums to the authorities demanding their right to speech in proceedings.

The senate meeting is due for December 22. Since past two years various students leaders had made umpteen requests regarding the same, but to no effect.

Talking to The Indian Express, PUCSC president Satinder Singh Satti said, " We are aware of the upcoming senate meeting on December 22. For this, we have planned to raise our demand before the authorities. As per the authorities directions we will first submit a memorandum and would see their reaction."

Legal in-charge Student Organization of India (SOI), Parambir Singh said that their organisisation will put forth the issue as well. "Since day one we have been pressing that the syndicate and senate members are elected through voting in which graduate students also participate, then in the same sense the PUCSC leader also gets elected through voting. So the president should also be allowed in the Senate proceedings.

Moreover, in the senate, the members do take decision about matters and issues related to students but unfortunately no one from their side is allowed to pour in their views, he added.

Dean Student Welfare, Prof A S Ahluwalia said, " There is no provision which permits student leaders to participate in the senate proceedings exists. Authorities, from time to time, have tried their level best to allow them but we cannot go against rules. Moreover, it is in the hands of the Chancellor".

He further added, " Students were also made to meet the chancellor, however, it did not help".
