The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) today withdrew its support to the Congress-led coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir. In a 25-point chargesheet later sent to Sonia Gandhi, the party criticised the Congress for not ending its alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party, which it claimed was continuing its “hatred campaign against the Army” and harpin g on “demilitarisation”.

The announcement was made by JKNPP chief Prof Bhim Singh after a special plenary session of the party state council here today. The meeting was attended by all four party MLAs, Balwant Singh Mankotia, Harsh Dev Singh, Yashpal Kundal and Faqir Nath. However, the withdrawal of support will not threaten the stability of the coalition Government which has over 50 seats in the 89-member Assembly. Party sources said the letter of withdrawal of support was handed over to Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her residence.

The JKNPP had earlier given an ultimatum to the Congress party, threatening to quit the coalition if PDP was not ousted from the Government. Prof Singh had alleged that PDP’s policies were secessionist in nature and a threat to national security.

In an emotional address to party workers today, Prof Singh lashed out at the PDP for unleashing a hatred campaign against the Army. “If the Army leaves Kashmir, it will land in the lap of Pakistan very soon,” he reasoned.

Listing out the reasons for his decision, Prof Singh said the Wazir Commission was not implemented the way it was intended, while the delimitation commission, meant for rectifying the regional imbalances in the allocation of Assembly seats, has not been constituted at all.

“On top of it, ministers and bureaucrats involved in scandals, continue to enjoy power. Despite the tall claims of the Government, they have failed to ensure return of Kashmiri Pandits, which is a must for maintaining the secular character of the Valley”, the fire-brand leader added.
