Police on Wednesday claimed to have got a suicide note that was jointly written by Paras Bhasin, a young tattoo artist whose body was recovered from railway tracks in East Delhi, and his wife.
The 23-year-old man's body was recovered from railway tracks in Pandav Nagar on Saturday with police initially claiming it to be a case of suicide. Paras's family, however, alleged that he was murdered.
Police said BBA student Paras's wife gave them the suicide note written by the couple in the last week of August. The two married secretly at an Arya Samaj temple, after her family objected to their relationship. "She gave us the note during questioning," a police officer said.
The note has been sent to the forensic laboratory to verify the handwriting of the couple.
Though police initially called it suicide, DCP (Crime and Railways) Sanjay Kumar Jain on Wednesday said: "Based on allegations by Bhasin's family, we are probing the murder angle as well. An impartial investigation is being carried out."
A case of murder has been registered against Paras's father-in-law, but his family demanded that the CBI should take up the case.
Paras's family has alleged that the Railway Police had tried to weaken the case by making it look like a suicide or an accident.
"My son could have not committed suicide. He was going to meet a lawyer for his wife's custody that evening and was very happy. Why would he commit suicide? The police are not investigating the case properly," Paras's mother said.
Police said Paras was spotted boarding a Metro alone at Subhash Nagar station at 3.14 pm on Saturday. He was again spotted getting down at Lakshmi Nagar Metro station at 4.11 pm, an hour before his mutilated body was found on the tracks. "We have checked the CCTV footage of Delhi Metro," a police officer said.
