The Parel workshop of the Central Railway (CR) is ready to dispatch one more diesel narrow gauge engine,this time on the Kalka- Shimla hill route of Northern Railway. Earlier,four engines had been dispatched on this route.
According to Parel workshop authorities,as per orders,they had to manufacture 15 engines for this hill route. The remaining four engines are to be sent by this financial year and six engines will be sent next year.
The Parel workshop also has an order from North Central Railway to make three narrow gauge engines for its narrow gauge section near Gwalior.
Sunit Sharma,chief works manager,Parel workshop,CR,said,We have talked to the department concerned regarding the delivery of this engine. Hopefully, they will come to see it next week. We have carried out successful trials in the workshop. It took six months to complete the engine. Now there is more space in the drivers cabin. The frame and hood of the engine is also manufactured by the workshop. We will provide four more narrow gauge engines to the Kalka-Shimla route this fiscal. We also have to manufacture six more engines for this section, said Sharma.
Till date,the Parel workshop has breathed new life into two steam engines and manufactured seven narrow gauge diesel engines Two for Neral-Matheran mini railway and five for the Kalka-Shimla hill route (including the narrow gauge engine which will be sent next week and the four sent in 2008).
