Manu Sharma got a month’s parole on September 18 for “performing religious rituals for his departed grandmother”. The order — Newsline has a copy — does not say that Sharma’s mother Shakti Rani was ailing.

Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna suspended Sharma’s sentence for a month “...only on the grounds (of) performing religious rituals for his departed grandmother, to maintain social ties, attend to aged mother and to attend neglected business interest”.

The Delhi government has now begun an inquiry into whether Sharma violated the terms of his parole. According to the order signed by Deputy Secretary Home (General) Mukul Koranga, Sharma was supposed to:
* Furnish Rs 4,000 and a personal bond for release and extension of parole
* Maintain peace and good behaviour
* Stay at House No. 229, Sector 9C, Chandigarh
* Report weekly to the police station
* Surrender in Tihar on expiry of parole
* The parole was valid till he became liable to be detained in some other case

On October 21, Sharma’s parole was extended for a month “to attend (to) business and related activities”. The order was signed by Deputy Secretary Home (General) B M Jain.

The fact that Sharma left Chandigarh and was partying in Delhi — an apparent violation of parole conditions — will be looked into, senior Home Department officials said.

If he is found to have brawled, it would be seen as violation of the condition to “maintain peace and good behaviour”, they said.
