Gujarat’s IG CID (Crime) Geeta Johri, probing the November, 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a fake encounter and the murder of his wife Kausarbi a few days later, today split the investigation into two parts — separating the Kausarbi case from the Sohrabuddin ‘encounter’.
Johri told The Indian Express that the CID had completed its probe into the Sohrabuddin case. “There were a few loose ends which we tied up over the weekend. The final investigation report on the fake encounter is ready and the investigation officer will now file a chargesheet. From today, I am starting investigations into the disappearance of Kausarbi. I will start from scratch, concentrating on that part of the case,” she said.
On the Sohrabuddin case, Johri said: “The fake encounter case is more about disproving the ATS (Anti-Terrorism Squad) story and prove contrary all the evidences they produced to show it as a genuine encounter. After the fake encounter, they tried to put a lid on everything and when the investigation started, they again attempted to cover up. We have all necessary documentary, oral and physical evidences to back our case to prove it was a fake.”
On May 17, the Supreme Court asked the CID (Crime) to submit an action taken report (ATR) “in two to three weeks” which the agency says it will do so in the second week of June. The CID (Crime) has time till July 20 to file a chargesheet in the case.
Johri denied reports that she wrote a letter or filed an affidavit in court that Additional DGP O P Mathur, was tying her hands.
