Five people sustained minor injuries when a part of an under-construction Railway Over Bridge (ROB) over the Pune-Nashik Road collapsed on Friday night. The Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has initiated an inquiry into the incident.
According to civic officials, the incident occurred between Kalyan and Vithalwadi around 11.30 pm. "A new ROB is being built over the road and is in its final stages of construction. Part of the scaffolding under the final span of the ROB collapsed, injuring three labourers and two passersby. One labourer sustained a rib fracture, while others escaped with minor injuries," said Ramnath Sonawane, municipal commissioner, KDMC.
Prima facie, it is believed that the scaffolding could not bear the load of the concrete. "Our city engineer and executive engineer (projects), along with some consultants, have launched an inquiry," Sonawane added.
Railway officials said the incident occurred around 15 metres away from the Down central line. As it occurred outside the railway boundaries, the incident did not affect local train services, they said.
KDMC officials will decide action in the matter after the inquiring committee submits its report.
