Parties doled out cash to buy votes in bypoll: Biman Bose

CPM state secretary Biman Bose on Sunday alleged that political parties pumped in large sum of money during the Assembly by-elections held in three constituencies in the state on Saturday to buy votes. Speaking to mediapersons, a day after Nalhati in Birbhum, Rejinagar in Murshidabad and Englishbazar in Malda went to polls, Bose said: "There had been intensive campaigning from three sides. A lot of money had been spent in these elections. This had never happened before." All the three seats fall in Congress bastion and Trinamool Congress has fielded disgruntled leaders of the Congress in all the three seats making it a bitter contest between the two former allies. Bose accused the Trinamool of indulging in violence against those who joined the general strike called by trade unions on February 20 and 21. "People's ears have been chopped off, eyes had been gorged out. This is not the way that works in a democracy,'' Bose said.
