Pastor manhandling not communal: Ghaziabad cops

The Ghaziabad police on Saturday denied that the case of a pastor being manhandled in Sahihabad was a communal attack.

The Ghaziabad police on Saturday denied that the case of a pastor being manhandled in Sahihabad was a communal attack.

Pastor Gladwin Masih,a resident of New Seemapuri in East Delhi,had lodged an FIR with the police saying his group was manhandled by locals while returning from a prayer meet in Defence Colony,Sahibabad,around 9.30 pm on Thursday. “We were attacked since we were Christians,” the FIR says.

Three people — a photo studio operator Arun Kumar,one “Mr Sharma” and a minor — were named in the FIR. The accused,too,registered a counter-FIR,Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police Raghubir Lal said.

“Just because the victims and accused belong to different communities does not mean the incident was communal,though both the victim and the accused tried to give a communal flavour to it,” he said.

Sahibabad Station House Officer Suraj Pal said,“Preliminary probe found the locals had objected to late-night prayers as it disturbed them. The argument got out of hand after their vehicles collided.”
