Patil says Mumbai police should act promptly on complaints

"If there is any complaint of laxity in addressing cases of violence against women we will hold an inquiry against the concerned police official and hold senior police official accountable," Patil said, adding that the government was keen that all cases pertaining to violence against women be completed within 30 days, the chargesheet be filed in 90 days and day to day hearings in specially designated courts be undertaken.

The rising cases of violent incidents against women have set the state machinery on a remedial measure overdrive.

Continuing with the precedent of the past few days where the state had been holding extended meetings with police officials to curb violence against women, R R Patil also met the state DGP Sanjeev Dayal on Thursday to check the police's preparedness.

The home minister, however, stated the high number of police personnel deployed for VIP protection as well as doing bandobast duties during religious festivals meant the police force was not able to function effectively.

He added the state was planning to review the security that was being provided to politicians and other VIPs to check out the threat perceptions.

Patil said that this review would help rationalise the number of policemen deputed for VIP protection who could then be used for normal policing.
