Patkar fast enters 6th day

The demands were not only pertaining to the alleged fraud in the project but also comprised issues pertaining to slum rehabilitation

As Medha Patkar’s indefinite fast entered the sixth day amid half-demolished brick and mortar structures in Golibar,Santacruz (East),the movement against a slum rehabilitation scheme, led by a few hundred slum-dwellers in this pocket of real estate close to the Western Express Highway, grew into a pan-Mumbai agitation that demanded a sea change in the administration of slum rehabilitation schemes.

Until Wednesday evening,a delegation from slum colonies was in a meeting with officials of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority in Bandra. Patkar, unwell for two days and reportedly very weak but stable, led the delegation even as a large group waited outside. The demands were not only pertaining to the alleged fraud in the project but also comprised issues pertaining to slum rehabilitation.

“They also demanded a high powered committee to look into illegal demolitions and corruption in slum schemes,” said Mukta Srivastava of National Alliance of People’s Movements.
