  • Former Test player and independent candidate Lalchand Rajput was elected one of the two joint secretaries of the Mumbai Cricket Associations (MCA) on Friday in one of the only contests left in an election in which president Sharad Pawar and vice-presidents Dilip Vengsarkar and Vilasrao Deshmukh won unopposed.

In a three way contest, Rajput defeated PV Shetty, a nominee from Pawar’s panel. This was to be the only glitch for the Pawar group, which once again dominated the proceedings. Hemant Waigankar retained his position as joint secretary and the ruling group also won the treasurer’s post, for which the incumbent Ratnakar Shetty, who is also the BCCI’s Chief Administrator Officer, defeated former vice-president Ravi Sawant. Shetty polled 174 votes as compared to Sawant’s 133.

When Rajput was asked how he, as an independent, would work in a committee with two heavyweights, he said: “In the Indian team, there are players from different states but still they play as one. If they leave their political difference aside, I see no problem. I’ve worked with Mr Pawar in the past.”
