PCB plans door-to-door garbage collection, staff health check-up

The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) is getting stricter about hygiene and cleanliness of hotels in Pune Camp. At a meeting attended by members of Pune Restaurant and Hotel Owners' Association, Brigadier M S Jaswal, PCB president and K V Nagireddy, PCB CEO, it was decided that a door-to-door garbage collection system would be set up to dispose of the heaps of garbage collected daily outside hotels and restaurants. "We plan to go ahead with door-to-door collection of garbage. We also plan to appoint a food inspector for hotel kitchens, along with conducting medical test of the staff," said Brig Jaswal at the General Body meeting of PCB on Friday.

They are also plans of giving 'star' ratings to the hotels in the cantonment board area on the basis of hygiene and cleanliness, implementation of which will, however, take some time. There are about 78 authorised hotels within the limits of Pune Camp, besides over 350 hawkers, food stalls and hotels.

"This is the first time that the cantonment board president held a meeting with the Association and addressed our issues. Till now, there was no option but to throw garbage on the road which attracts rodents," said Ganesh Shetty, president of the Association.

Another issue addressed in the meeting attended by 40 members of the Association was hygiene in kitchens of hotels and restaurants.

Shetty said, "Some 30-35 per cent of the hotels and restaurants (20-25) have court cases going on against them, wherein owners have gone to the court against hotel owners. Thus no additions, alterations are allowed to be carried out in the kitchens. This is what creates unhygienic conditions in kitchens."

"The Pune Municipal Corporation has a system, wherein in case of litigation going on in the court, the hotel can obtain special permission from the court for kitchen repairs. This is not the case with PCB. We have put across this problem to the PCB president."
