PCB wants Rs 94-cr projects to figure in city development plan

JNNURM Board approaches PMC again after civic body did not respond to its proposal to include development projects in phase one of the scheme

The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has approached the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) with a proposal to include its projects in the revised City Development Plan (Phase II) under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The projects, costing approximately Rs 94 crore, include sewerage management system, stormwater drainage system for the entire cantonment area, a sewerage treatment plant and a project involving solid waste management.

In 2009, the JNNURM scheme was extended to PCB and 27 other cantonment boards across the country. Previously, the PMC did not respond to the PCB's demand to include developmental projects within the Pune Camp under City Development Plan Phase I under JNNURM.

In a detailed reply to a questionnaire sent by The Indian Express, PCB Chief Executive Officer K V Nagi Reddy said: "This office was informed by the higher authorities regarding extension of JNNURM scheme in the cantonment area and to liaise with the Pune Municipal Corporation to ensure that the projects be included in the Revised City Development Plan (Phase II) under JNNURM. M/s Voyanti Solutions Pvt Ltd visited this office and introduced themselves as consultant appointed by the PMC for preparation of city development plan under JNNURM scheme. After a detailed discussion with the consultant, the aforesaid projects were forwarded to the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Spl) and requested to include in Phase II of the city development plan under JNNURM scheme."

The projects are estimated to cost Rs 94 crore collectively. The reply said the cost indicated were purely tentative as detailed estimates were yet to be finalised. In 2009, PCB was informed by the office of the DGDE, New Delhi, that the JNNURM scheme was extended to 28 cantonment boards for incorporating of the infrastructural requirements of cantonment areas in the city development plans prepared by the state governments. The PCB had thus approached the PMC seeking to include six projects in phase one of JNNURM. But the reply sent by Reddy said: "This office informed the PMC to include the abovesaid projects in phase one under JNNURM. However, they did not include the same in phase 1 and neither responded to the same."
