PDP seeks Omar resignation over ‘mystery death’

Caesar cannot be investigated till he is Caesar.

The Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today demanded the resignation of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and MoS Home Nasir Aslam Wani over the “mysterious death” of National Conference “sympathiser” Haji Yousuf hours after Omar had handed him over to the Crime Branch.

“Caesar cannot be investigated till he is Caesar. In order to inspire confidence,Caesar must step aside,” PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beig said,“It is a mysterious death. We don’t know whether he (Haji Yousuf) died at Omar’s residence or in custody. Suspiciously three people who were on the personal security of chief minister were transferred overnight. They must have been either witness to what happened or must have been instruments.”

Haji Yousuf’s son Syed Talib Hussain told The Indian Express that at around 4.30 pm yesterday he received a call from his father, who had told him that he was going to Srinagar to meet MoS HomeNasir Aslam Wani.

“My father in law called him (Haji) at 5.15 pm,and he had told him that he was with Nasir. The last call he received was from my brother-in-law,who told us that as soon as he (Haji) took the call, somebody snatched his phone,” Talib Hussain, who stays at the Agriculture University hostel, said.

“At 5.30 am today,I received a call from home. My family told me that father had gone to meet Nasir (MoS Home) last evening but didn’t return home. They said that both his cellphones were switched off,” Hussain said.

At around 7.30 am,Haji’s son-in-law Syed Wajid Andrabi went to SSP,Srinagar,S A Bukhari’s home for help. “He said my father is with the Crime Branch. We went to the Crime Branch headquarters but were not allowed in. Hours later,my uncle Syed Muzaffar Hussain, who is deputy director,Prosecution,in the Crime Branch, got to know that my father’s body was lying in the police hospital,” Hussain said.

The police,Hussain said, were “cooking up stories”. “My father had no history of heart problem. If he was unwell why didn’t they (Crime Branch) inform us? Why didn’t the minister tell us? Why didn’t the CM tell us?”

MoS Wani told The Indian Express that Haji had “complained of nausea and was taken to the police hospital, where he died of a heart attack this morning”.

The Crime Branch had not registered a case when Haji died. DGP Kuldeep Khoda said,“Verification was still going on when the accused died. In Crime Branch,we conduct preliminary verification first and then register a case. Even the preliminary verification could not be done.” Khoda said he did not know “why Haji’s phones were switched off during the night”.

IG Crime Raja Ajaz said: “He complained of nausea and I took him to the police hospital. He wasn’t with us at all. There was no question of him being in our custody.”
