A day after JK Chief Minister Omar Abdullah ordered a judicial probe into the mysterious death of two women in Shopian in south Kashmir,PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and a dozen of party legislators and leaders were taken into preventive custody when they staged a protest march against the alleged killings. The PDP legislators, led by Mehbooba Mufti, marched from their party headquarters to the city centre, demanding action against those responsible for the deaths. The party has now called for a march to Shopian on Wednesday. A PDP spokesman said that the march,to be led by Mehbooba Mufti, would mark the beginning of the partys campaign for revocation of AFSPA and the reduction of troops. Escorted by a huge police and paramilitary contingent, the protestors raised slogans demanding punishment for those guilty for the deaths, the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the state as well as the resolution of the Kashmir issue. Mehbooba charged the Government with bungling the Shopian investigation and compromising the judicial inquiry process even before it was ordered. What will the inquiring judge find out when the Chief Minister categorically rules out any foul play? she said. The Valley has been on the edge since the bodies of Nilofar Jan,22,and her niece,Asiya Jan,17 were recovered from a stream in Shopian town on Friday. The residents allege that the two were abducted, raped and killed by security forces. The J-K police, however, claimed that the detention was a security measure undertaken after the PDP march was pelted with stones. They (PDP leaders) were taken into preventive security when they came under stone pelting near Kokar Bazar while trying to take out a march from Sher-e-Kashmir Park,Lal Chowk and Budshah Chowk, J-K Director General of Police,CID,Ashok Bhan said.
