With every issue turning into a reason for “disturbance”, it’s important that people take responsibility to bring in peace. Not just preach, but negotiate to achieve it. That too in a fashion that reaps tangible results. “And for that what is required is a strategic approach. To go and give lectures to public could help at a basic level, but what is required is talks with policy makers,” points out Rotary International Director KR Ravindran, who’s here from Sri Lanka. Ravindran talks about the Rotary Peace Scholarship Studies in Conflict Resolution that they offer with five universities across the world for this very reason, “we create agents of change, who can be employed with companies of repute and get the power to be able to sit with higher-ups to negotiate for a better world, so that no one will have to play the blame game. Not in the case of acts of terrorism, not in case of natural calamities and not in times when children need us. “We cannot stop flying bullets, but what we can do is put some sense into those firing them,” Ravindran refers to the time when they successfully negotiated a ceasefire with rebels during the polio immunization days in Sri Lanka. He also cites the instance when they spearheaded a project to build 20 high-quality schools for Tsunami-displaced project in Sri Lanka at a cost of USD 12 million, that helped 15,000 children to return to school. “It’s all about wanting a change with full zeal,” he says that for now the focus is on successfully eradicating polio across the world...
