  • The Mumbai Police Crime Branch, which today filed a chargesheet against Indian Mujhadeen suspects including Mansoor Asghar Peerbhoy, the alleged head of the IM ‘media wing’, is likely to make his younger brother Adil Asgar Peerbhoy a witness to prove Mansoor used his Maruti car to travel to Matunga and Chembur. Mansoor has been accused of hacking into two WiFi accounts in these localities to send emails to media houses claiming responsibility for the Ahmedabad and Delhi blasts last year.

According to the prosecution, Mansoor had driven the black Maruti Esteem (MH-12-CA-44309) belonging to Adil from Pune, where the family resides, to Mumbai to hack into the unsecured WiFi accounts at Khalsa College, Matunga, and at a Chembur residence to send the emails.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Ashok Duraphe, confirmed that Adil would be a prosecution witness. “He would have to depose in court about his car being used by his brother Mansoor to travel from Pune to Mumbai and how he later handed it over to police,” he said. Adil has also moved an application before the special court seeking the car to be returned to him. The application will come up for hearing on Wednesday.

On her son being made an accused despite his application to turn approver Mansoor’s mother, who was present in court, refrained from giving a reaction. “Is there only Mansoor the media wants to follow? Will the media stop harassing me and my family,” she asked.

Alim (24), a computer engineer, was present with his mother in the court. Speaking to Newsline,Alim, the youngest of the four Peerbhoy brothers, said, “Mansoor can’t be a terrorist. He works for about 15 hours a day. Where would he get time for terrorist activities? Even if he did send these e-mails, he must have been made to do so by other people without him having any knowledge of such terrorist intentions.”

Alim added, “We expect the case to drag on for four to five months. It has been such an ordeal for us. We have been travelling to different parts of the country depending on where my brother is being taken by the cops. It has been hard for my mother. For people of my age, it’s easy to shrug off the stigma and get on with our lives. But my parents have a standing in society built over the years, and now they are devastated.”

'They want to read it themselves'
Most of the accused chose to carry the chargesheet back with them after their production in court. Farhana Shah, defence lawyer for one of the accused, said, "All the accused are well educated. They would want to know the case made out against them. They have taken it with them."

    Suspects partied after the blasts
The IM suspects allegedly held a dinner to celebrate in Pune following the Ahmedabad blasts. According to the Crime Branch, they were monitoring television channels to check whether their operation had been a success.

The chargesheet states that a dinner party was arranged by wanted accused Iqbal Bhatkal through Mohsin Chaudhari at Kamaldeep Apartments on July 26 evening to mark the execution of the Ahmedabad blasts. They watched TV coverage of the blasts together and prided themselves on the mission accomplished, states the chargesheet.
