Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday hit back at Digvijay Singh for criticising party chief Nitin Gadkari, saying the people of the country have stopped taking the Congress General Secretary seriously.

Prasad said Gadkari had gone abroad on a family programme, and added that the schedule was finalised about four months ago.

"The Congress Party does not take Digvijay Singh seriously, then why are you all (mediapersons) taking him seriously. Even the people of this country have stopped taking him seriously," he added.

Digvijay Singh earlier in the day had said: "Nitin Gadkari has gone to Alaska for comfort and leisure when the discussions are not able to take place and the country is going through a difficult phase. The Opposition cannot take the decision to remove the Prime Minister of any elected government. "

"If the Opposition has any proof to substantiate the charges made, they could present it, form a majority, and defeat the government. If they have strong evidences to prove that the Prime Minister was involved in corrupt practices then they can lodge an FIR with the evidence," he added.

The Prime Minister had ruled out any possibility of quitting the top post despite the BJP firm on its demand for his resignation over the coal blocks allocation issue.

Interaction with mediapersons onboard the special plane while returning to New Delhi from Tehran after attending the 16th NAM summit, PM said that he can''t get into a war of words with political leaders, and added that he has to maintain the dignity of the office of the Prime Minister.

PM also criticised the BJP for disrupting the proceeding in Parliament.

The Prime Minister had earlier on Monday rejected the CAG's observations as ''misleading'' and ''flawed'', and blamed the opposition parties for thwarting the efforts of his government to bring a policy of competitive bidding.
