PGI added over two lakh new patients in 2012

In the last one year, the premier tertiary care institute PGIMER has added a whopping 2,50,000 new patients to its existing list of OPD patients touching an all time high of 19,19,136 attendance in 2012. In the previous year, the total number of patients who visited various OPDs in the institute was 17,89,450 while in 2010 this number was 16,57,200.

The number of in-patients admitted to the institute has been pegged at 71,357 which saw a jump from 66,983 in 2011. In 2010, a total of 64,745 patients were admitted to various wards of PGI.

To meet the requirements of over an average of 1,50,000 patients being added every year, the premier institution — with just 500 faculty doctors and 1,000 senior residents — continues to stretch itself to provide the best healthcare services to the patients.

A glaring example of how the patient load has affected the healthcare at PGI is the death of a teenager Anupama (17), who died due to delay in surgery as there was a long list of patient who were to be operated upon before her.

While patients have increased, the infrastructure of PGI has grown at a much slower pace, thanks to the administrative rigmarole and so called red tapism involved in government set up, but this has not deterred doctors from performing a huge number of life saving surgeries.

In 2012, doctors performed 33,990 major surgeries and1,21,384 minor surgeries.

In 2011, doctors performed 33,783 major surgeries while 99,821 minor surgeries were performed.

In 2010, this number was 32,399 and 70,203 respectively.

On the contrary, from 2000 to 2011, PGI could only add about 500 beds to the existing 1,200. In 2000, PGI had 1,268 beds, in 2009-2010 1,612, and in 2010-2011, 1,765 beds.
