PGI parking rates likely to double

Visitors and patients coming to the institute already face the problem of being unable to find a parking spot. And now if the revised tenders for the lots, which will be floated shortly, are anything to go by they will also have to shell out more.

Sources in PGIMER say that soon one will have to pay Rs 10 instead of Rs 5 for one-time parking of a car at any of the paid parking lots at the institute while for the entire day's parking, for which the existing rates are Rs 10, will soon be revised to Rs 25 for a car.

Significantly, the institute has added more specialties and has also opened Advanced Centre for many of these specialties. However, parking remains a perennial problem both for the patients as well as the institute.

For the authorities, it is a problem of overcrowdedness. "We are trying our best to expand the parking lots for the convenience of the visitors in whatever space that is available with us in the institute," said PGI official spokesperson.

On any given day, PGI caters to over 5,000 patients who visit different Out Patient Departments (OPDs) besides over 300 patients who are in emergency wing on any given day and their attendants.

Also, with the Advanced Trauma Centre, which is partially functional as of now, the matter is only going to be worse with the ATC having a parking of only about 50-60 cars in its basement.

Even now, the patients and their relatives can be seen struggling for parking in order to go to ATC through its main entrance.
