Dr Ramesh Kumar Sen, additional professor and head Unit II, department of Orthopaedics, PGIMER, Chandigarh, has been awarded the “First Golden Jubilee Commemoration Award” of the Indian Orthopaedic Association at its 53rd Annual conference on December 5 at Bengaluru. Dr Sen has received the award for his scientific contribution in Stem cell Research in the disease of Avascular necrosis (AVN) of hip joints.
This is the highest research award given by the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) which has a membership of 7,500 Orthopaedic surgeons from India and abroad.
The award included a Golden plaque and cash. The research on the clinical use of stem cell has been done with the help of Blood Transfusion Department in collaboration with the Association of Dynamic Osteosynthesis, Hong Kong, and Association of Orthopaedic Research, France. It is the biggest study on this therapy in the world.
The Association has also decided to start a ‘Research Foundation of the IOA’ under the Chairmanship of Dr Ramesh Kumar Sen to promote research in various orthopaedic conditions affecting the population in the country.
Dr Ramesh Sen was awarded a fellowship by IOS-UK to visit various hospitals in England for a period of two weeks last month.
He was awarded an International scholarship to be at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association meeting at Denver, USA.
