PIL seeks protection of domestic violence victims

A PIL seeking protection of victims of domestic violence has been filed in the Bombay High Court.

The PIL by Pune social worker Rajendra Andhule stated that the appointment of full-time protection officers is mandatory under the Domestic Violence Act, 2005 but the state government has taken no steps to implement it.

It further states that an officer should be deployed at each police station and at every judicial magistrate's court. At present, the PIL claims, the task has been assigned to revenue officers in the state who are saddled with other jobs. It also alleged that the state had not made any budgetary provision for appointment of such officers. Even after delegating this task to revenue officers, no training had been given to them on how to conduct themselves in such cases, the PIL states.

The PILs ays the protection officers need to have a degree in law or social work. These officers are required to help victims, bring about settlements between victims and their family members, assist courts to conduct the trial, provide shelter to victims, if necessary, and help in securing the custody of children of mothers subjected to domestic violence. The court has asked the secretary of the women and child development department to file an affidavit informing the court about the government's stand in the case by March 14.

Sailor who killed self was homesick, father tells police

Abhishek Kumar Kushwaha, 19, a sailor who allegedly committed suicide aboard INS Delhi at Lions Gate in Colaba on the first day of sea training on Friday was homesick and unable to adjust to life away from home, his father Jaynarayan Kushwaha told police.

On Sunday, Jaynarayan (48), a farmer living in Bharsal village in Uttar Pradesh's Balia district, collected his son's body from St. George Hospital and left for home after recording his statements at Colaba police station.
