An 11-member medical board of the SSKM Hospital that was formed to determine the gender of Asian Games gold medallist Pinki Pramanik, who was arrested on June 14 on rape charges, has concluded that the athlete has “predominantly male features”. This came on a day a local court in Barasat granted Pramanik bail in the case.

After the Karyotyping (a chromosomal test) was conducted at the West Bengal University of Technology, the reports were sent to the SSKM Hospital on Monday. The medical board went through it today and concluded that Pramanik has 46,XY Karyotype — present in males.

“Normal Karyotypes for females contain two X chromosomes and are denoted as 46,XX. Males have an X and a Y chromosome and are denoted 46,XY. Tests reports revealed that Pramanik has predominantly male features. The test reports, along with our observations, has been submitted to the court,” a member of the SSKM medical board told The Indian Express on condition of anonymity.

“At the same time,Pramanik has the disorder of sexual development. In medical science not everything can be said in black and white. This case has the shades of grey. Pramanik doesn’t have all the features that a normal adult male has,” the doctor said.

Asked if such a person can rape someone,he,however, said that it was “very difficult” to tell. Pramanik’s counsel Tuhin Roy,however, said that based on the medical reports, the court held that the athlete is “physically incapable of committing rape”.

“The next hearing was scheduled on July 12. Today,we had the bail hearing of Pramanik’s parents. But I moved in a request to grant bail to the athlete and the judge accepted it on a personal bond of Rs 5,000. Pramanik is likely to be released on Wednesday,” Roy said.

Chaotic scenes were seen as the proceedings began at the court. Members of the women’s forum, former athletes and other players gathered demonstrated outside the court, demanding Pramanik’s immediate release. Amid the clamour, the woman,a mother of one,who had made the allegations against the middle-distance runner, fainted.

State sports minister Madan Mitra later lambasted the women’s forum. “I don’t know why they went to the court. I don’t want to comment on the issue as it might influence the case. I want the police to investigate and reveal the truth,” Mitra said.
