Pipeline bursts due to monorail work

A six-inch water pipeline was ruptured in Parel on Friday due to the ongoing work on the Wadala-Jacob Circle monorail line in the area, stopping water supply to Tata Hospital for a while.

The incident took place at around 1 am on Friday when Larsen & Toubro, the contractor in charge of the monorail construction, was launching guideway beams — on which the monorail runs — on the stretch opposite the hospital.

"A heavy crane is used for the launching work. When the crane climbed the adjoining footpath, it couldn't bear the load and gave way, leading to an underground utility being ruptured," said an engineer from MMRDA.

MMRDA officials alerted the BMC to start restoration work at the site.

"It was a water pipeline that burst on the road between Tata Hospital and KEM Orthopaedic Hospital. Water supply to the neighbouring KEM and Wadia hospitals was normal, but the incident disrupted water supply at Tata Hospital.

We have arranged for tankers to supply water to the hospital," a hydraulic engineer from the BMC said.
