Now,theres one more eatery to choose from in the busy middle lane of Khan Market. As the name suggests,Café Oz,a two-floor eatery near Amici, aims to recreate the mood and flavours of Australia. Khan Market is frequented by expats and shoppers looking for a quick, filling meal. We serve a mix of dishes which are popular in Australian cafes, says owner Karamjit Kaur, who has spent the last 16 years in Sydney. Kaur has also set up another Cafe Oz outlet in DLF Mall,Saket.
Café Oz has an informal café on the first floor and plans to furnish its upper level with Australian wines once the liquor licence is in place. A tea lounge is also on cards a small cubicle in the café is done up in bright reds and will soon stock gourmet tea. The décor is minimal brick walls, wooden floors and black leather seats. What brightens the place are two large colourful frames of Sydneys sandy beach and the Harbour Bridge, and a semi-translucent ceiling near the kitchen which brings in ample sunlight.
The menu, however, mostly contains the usual suspects. There are pizzas, club sandwiches and bits from here and there. You can ask for a Malaysian broth (Rs 140) from its soup section,a Vegetable tagine (Rs 300) from its main course or fork in some Penno Pesto (Rs 290). The highlight of the menu is Herbed Chicken Schnitzel (Rs 280),an Aussie favourite. It offers two thin patties of chicken with a deliciously crunchy skin served with a heap of fried potato sticks. The café also serves beef burger (for Rs 350). We were keen on trying the Pizza Oz (Rs 420) which promised loads of barbequed chicken and rocket leaves, but the pizza oven wasnt ready. Instead,we opted for the tagine. A large plate of well-spiced cous cous blanketed with a layer of curried vegetables was served to us. If you want to keep your dishes classically prepared and presented, skip this one for now. Instead of the tagine pots, the chef is currently using regular skillets to rustle up this dish.
Desserts are generously portioned. We could barely finish our Zuccotto cake (Rs 195),a gooey chocolate cake, and Orange Polenta cake (Rs 89),that offered a large triangle of bright yellow cheese cake topped with orange jelly.
