Plans for better data inventory and tailor-made solutions

In its effort to streamlime its data inventory system and to make the process of data analysis more tailor-made for the end user, the IMD has undertaken an ambitious project of revamping and digitising its systems. The project which is expected to be completed next year, would not only bring in more automation in the process of data collection but would also allow real time monitoring and reporting with automatic messages.

The climatological data, based on which predictions and other weather related studies are done, according to B Mukhopadhyay, is based on the data collected in 200 conventional weather observations centres using hand held data loggers. Once this data are obtained, they are processed at the National Climate Data Center (NCDC) and used for predictions and other things. The obvious pit-fall for the system, according to Mukhopadhyay, is that the data can be collected only at certain times of the day and no dual communication is possible.

"Once the process of digitising and automation of the data collection systems is done other than making the communication system two way, we can also collect, analyse and process real time data at a faster rate," he said. Real time data, as the name indicates is the data that gives is collected instanteneous. "This would enable the real time predictions possible."

Another important parameter which would be added to the process would be taking in consideration various atmospheric transient pheonomenons into consideration for predictions. "Transient phenomenons like fog, are fast moving pheonomenons, which would be taken into considerations for the predictions due to the high end instruments and other machineries," he said.
