Platform for talent: IIT-Bombay launches ‘TechOlympics’

More than 240 teams will take part in the qualifying round of the national-level competition

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has, for the first time, launched a national level competition called 'TechOlympics'. Part of IIT-B's annual technological festival TechFest, the competition will be held across six cities in the country, from which top teams will be given an opportunity to compete and showcase their technological prowess during TechFest.

More than 240 teams will take part in the qualifying round of the national-level competition to be held at Bhubaneshwar, Coimbatore, Indore, Jaipur, Visakhapatnam and Mumbai.

Shrey Singh, a student of IIT B and manager of Techfest 2013, said the aim was to encourage a large number of engineering students from institutes outside Mumbai to participate in the competition and showcase their talent and compete with the best across the country. "Through TechOlympics our plan is to exchange ideas as well as expose college students to different technological developments and innovations at the national-level," she said.

The competition will be held in two segments and will have four categories: Line Following - Grid Master, Aqua Robotics - Pirate Wars, Aero Modelling - Hover On, Coding - Program'm-able. The first segment will comprise qualifying rounds at the zonal level at the selected cities and will go on till the end of October, while the second segment will be the finale that will be held at the IIT-B campus at Powai during Techfest 2013 from January 3 to 5.

While the qualifying round has already begun in other cities, it will flag off in Mumbai from October 14 at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel College of Engineering in Andheri.

The two top teams from each category from each city will come to Mumbai where they will compete for the finale. Winners will also be given travelling allowances, certificates of excellence from IIT-B along with cash prizes of Rs 4 lakh.
