Chandigarh: Harminder Singh was named the best coach in two age categories during the annual function organised by Chandigarh Cricket Association at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, on Tuesday. He was named the best coach in u-16 and u-22 age categories. Jaswant Rai was the best coach in u-19 age category, followed by Harish Sharma in seniors category. MP Pandove was the chief guest at the occasion and he congratulated the CCA secretary Mohinder Singh for the performance of the Chandigarh team that had made a clean sweep in all the age groups, i.e. u-16, u-19, u-22 and seniors, and finished as the best district for the year 2012-13.
Basketball tourney from March 8
CHANDIGARH: A total of eight teams will take part in the 1st All India invitational (flood light) basketball tournament for men to be held at Sports Complex, Sector 46 in Chandigarh, from March 8 to 12. The participating teams are Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai), Oil and Natural Gas Commission (New Delhi), Central Reserve Police Force (New Delhi), Punjab Basketball Association (Ludhiana), Punjab Armed Police Force (Jalandhar), Army Sports Control Board (New Delhi), Rail Coach Factory (Kapurthala) and Coaching Centre (Chandigarh). The tournament is being organised by Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration, under the aegis of the Basketball Federation of India and Chandigarh Basketball Association. The winners will get cash prize of Rs 1,50,000 and runners-up will get Rs 75,000. The third place winner will get Rs 50,000. The teams will be divided into two pools and all the matches will be played on league-cum-knockout basis. Ramesh Kalley, retired chief basketball coach of NIS Patiala, will be the overall in-charge for the five-day tournament.
Basketball trials postponed
CHANDIGARH: The trials for the selection of the Chandigarh senior basketball team which were scheduled to be held on February 27 at Sports Complex, Sector 42, Chandigarh at 5 pm, have been cancelled. The trials will now be conducted by the Chandigarh Basketball Association itself. The selected basketball team will represent Chandigarh in the 1st All India Invitational Basketball Tournament (Men), to be organised by Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration, at Sports Complex, Sector 46, Chandigarh, from March 8 to 12.
