  • Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday expressed concern over the week-long agitation by the employees union at the Visva Bharati University. He asked the employees to return to work and assured them an impartial enquiry into the allegations levelled against the varsity authorities. Employees have struck work since October 24 demanding a CBI probe into alleged corruption by V-C Rajat Kanta Ray, ranging from illegal appointments and alleged financial irregularities like claiming of false medical and travel bills.

AMU students drop demand for V-C removal

New Delhi: Students of Aligarh Muslim University protesting the closure of their campus on Tuesday softened their stance against the V-C but demanded resumption of classes, even as the V-C said the administration needed time to “restore an academic environment”. The university was closed sine die on Friday after protests erupted with the murder of a student by a local goon. The students said the protests were a result of “accumulated anger against the daily routine high-handedness and terror tactics by the administration”. PTI
