  • Annoyed with his “cattle class” Twitter remarks, the Congress today refused to acknowledge Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor’s apology, stating that “appropriate action” would be taken against him “at an appropriate time”. While the party even seconded Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s demand for Tharoor’s resignation, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sought to play down the comments, saying “it was a joke”.

When AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi was asked about Tharoor at an Iftaar hosted by the PM, he said whatever had to be said had been said by the party. Earlier, Tharoor is said to have called up Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Said party spokesperson Manish Tewari: “The Congress will take whatever action is deemed appropriate at an appropriate time.”

At an Iftaar in Jaipur, Gehlot repeated his demand for Tharoor’s resignation. “It was unfortunate and unbecoming on his part to make such comments... Comments such as this, even on the Internet, is unacceptable in Indian politics. I am of the opinion that he should tender his resignation as a Minister in the Central government. To make such irreverent comments is all the more despicable when one is holding a responsible position like Minister of State for External Affairs,” Gehlot told reporters.

Asked about Gehlot’s demand, Tewari said, “Obviously, when you have statements like this (from Tharoor), it is bound to get reactions.”

Replying to a query on Twitter, Tharoor had described airline economy class flyers as “cattle class”, drawing sharp reactions and condemnations from all political parties, including the Congress.

I strongly support Tharoors contentionBy: Neelabh mishra | 19-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward When the Political class day by days gets wilder as like long horned wild bisons, it travelling in the Economy (cattle) class would much be a nightmare for the cattle (common man)only. Probably the cattle might be ready to shed extra tax to facilite separate journeys of the wild bisons for that will ensure their convienience.
Much ado about nothingBy: Ramanathan A V | 19-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward It is a most pity that a remark unintended to depict nobody in bad tatse like 'cattle class' and holy cow has been made a mountain rather than a mole by the media, both print and electronic which want to break news first, even though it is a harmless remark widely used in America. However, Shashi Tharoor, should have been careful about his remark, when he is fully aware that his answer to the remarks will create a storm in a tea cup. It is strange when the tax payer has to cough up everything in the form of Tax deducted at Source, directtaxes, indirect taxes, CST, VAT, Service Tax, etc etc, the powers that be, spend like ater without any accountability. Asture measures are absolutely necessary. Simple and dignified wedding of Infosys narayanamurti's son is a pointer to celebrate an event with dignity but with decorum. Gandhiji travelled in Third Class and lived frugal life. Government should cut down expenditure, and bring down expenditure .Let Tharoor prove ability by performance.
Cracking jokesBy: Gopi | 19-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Mark Twain once said " Sacred Cows make the best Hamburgers". Burn everything he wrote, change the name of every thing that has " Mark" in it, have an Andolan against everyone who writes the two words in the same sentence...and Bharat will shine !! Get rid of Taroor, and anyone who has a sense of humor ( politicians are not elected to crack jokes, they have to do other crack jobes). Jai Ho ( oops... be careful in saying that Ho word as well, it has bad meaning in the west).
Unnecessary topicsBy: Neduncheziyan | 19-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward The media developed unnecessary topics which is not important with common citizen. Important matters are going at the corner of the media. Cinema and cattle are not important. Please think about a common man problem. The media could serve important roil to help common man life problems like fake encounter, communal riots so that real politics will come out and to elect a nobel men to center.
