PM candidate should be from bigger party: Nitish Kumar

Declaring that he had no prime ministerial ambition, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said he had always believed that the PM candidate of a coalition should "come from the biggest party of the alliance". Nitish added that he wanted to stay focused on Bihar.

Refraining from predicting Gujarat poll results, Nitish said the high voter turnout was a happy sign for democracy and showcased people's increasing interest in the electoral process.

Speaking at a post-janta darbar press conference, Nitish reacted to BJP national spokesperson's statement that NDA PM candidate would come from the BJP. "There is no surprise element in what Ravishankar Prasad said. I have always said the same."

Nitish said that he's fighting to get special category status for the state. "My focus is on Bihar. I have not said or done anything that suggests otherwise," he said.

Nitish had put pressure on the BJP by saying in June that the NDA's PM candidate should have a "clear and secular" image.
