  • Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said the Maoist problem has to be dealt with "in a holistic way" through a two-pronged approach of enforcing law and order and simultaneously carrying out development.

"We have to deal with it in a holistic way. Every state has to maintain and enforce law and order. Law and order is a precondition for any sustained social and economic development," Singh said at a press conference here.

Admitting that alienation of tribals was one of the reasons behind the Maoist problem, he said "we have to operate on two legs. We have to enforce and law and order and simultaneously we have to pay attention to the development dimension of the problem as well."

Singh said he recognised that in certain areas, particularly in areas where the tribal population is in large proportion to the total population, there is alienation, probably reflecting that the development programmes that have been put in place were not reaching those people.

However, the Prime Minister declined to comment on the West Bengal government's decision to swap suspected naxals to secure the freedom of a police officer abducted by Maoists. On Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's reported statement that there were no Maoists, he said "well, I have not seen this statement of the Railway Minister. Obviously, the Maoist threat is a reality and the government of India is duty bound to deal with it in an effective manner."

Why should I not become a naxaliteBy: Arvind Kumar | 29-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Let me state at the outset that I at one time filed a case against the Jahanabad jailbreak by the naxalites asking the government to take effective steps to combat extremism. However , it is difficult not to wish to become naxalite after coming out of police station. So is it if man without collateral security were to try to get a loan or get any work done in any government department.Corruption is the greatest bane of the republic. If it is not checked soon I fear it would not last. Often I feel India is 10 Afghanistan waiting to happen. People of India are groaning under corruption. The late Prime Minister rajiv Ghandhi had understood the problem and said only a small fraction of the government spending reaches the people . That fraction has reduced significantly in the years after that. The common man in India has no vested interest in the success of this republic. This country holds Mr Manmohan Singh in high esteem. We therefore hope nothing less than a complete solution.
Arvindji, Silent Majority Agrees with You!By: ABC | 29-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward From what you said, I'm guessing that you're a lawyer. People are mocking Sardarji, Chidambaram, Mamata et. al. when they refuse to call Maosts, terrorists. Maoists are perverts but are not terrorists because we have plenty of terrorists and willing to die in exchange pleasures in heaven. They choose to create fear and insecurity among people. Maoist (as much as I hate them), for most part have no other alternative. You mentioned Rajiv Gandhi! These skeptics and idiots mocked everything that great man ever said and did. They raised the Bofors Boogie and paralyzed his government from functioning. Snake VP Singh did not help. 20 years later, the boogie was just fragment of imagination that only helped propel Davilal and VP Singh to power. Today Rahul is reaching out to the poor and thinking outside the box while others still choose to mock, heckle and undermine with slurs of his mother's foreign origin or his great-grandfathers supposed affairs.
Holi Festival Treatment. - An Ambiguity.By: Geroge P. Joseph | 29-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Very tactful procedure to understand the Maos. To an extent it may work. It may be a Holi Festival treatment to them. To place them on rainbow hues and with no identity of darkness. Who will compromise in such an ambiguity!?
