Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday went where no VVIP normally goes: the Transport Department’s Regional Transport Office (RTO).

The PM, accompanied by his wife Gursharan Kaur, drove down to the Indraprastha Estate RTO and got his motor driving licence renewed. He turned down the Delhi Transport Department’s proposal to come over to Race Course Road for the renewal. Normally, VVIP driving licences are delivered to applicants’ addresses, bypassing usual procedures.

The Prime Minister’s Office insisted that Singh wanted his licence renewed with as little fuss as possible. There were specific instructions that the PM did not want Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit waiting for him at the Transport office. It is learnt that the PMO informed the Transport Department on Friday about Singh’s plans, and the RTO was especially opened on Sunday so that the procedure could be gone through quietly.

The PM’s motorcade reached the RTO — located on the premises of the Delhi Transport Corporation headquarters— at 11.20 a.m. Over the next 15 minutes, Singh went through the entire procedure, including filling renewal forms and having his photograph taken.

Delhi Transport Commissioner R K Verma briefed the PM on licencing procedures in the Capital. Apparently, the PM observed that Delhi was getting congested by the day, and said he had been advised he would actually not need the licence, as he would never be driving alone.

After getting his licence renewed till 2014, the PM signed the visitors’ book and left for Race Course Road. Drivers above the age of 45 must have their licences renewed every five years. The PM is 76.

PM Goes and gets license renewed himselfBy: Amulya Gurtu | 19-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward “PM Goes and gets license renewed himself” is the biggest joke I have ever read on the National Daily. RTO is opening the office specially on a weekend when no one else is allowed in side the office for regular business and still you are calling it “humility”.How is it different for a common man who gets it done through an agent? The quality / standard of news items
Wah, Wah, what a PM?By: Satish Kumar | 19-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Manmohan Singh ji, try some other gimmicks!!!!!!! Ordinary people have to pay hundreds of rupees as bribe (even when they are eligible) to get a license. You made the RTO work on Holiday and arm twisted them to sing in your praise. Have you got tired of singing in praise of Madam Sonia that you forced poor chaps to do some chamchagiri on holiday?
PM Going to RTOBy: francisco fernandes | 19-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward PM going to RTO:our PM is bindas and easy going no strong action and so no risk and no danger. Who can think of harming our very delicate PM. Such a good man and therefore for him it is easy not only go to the RTO but to any place as he has no enemies inside the country and even outside the country, even in POK they will not bother to harm him. You rarely find people at such a high position without any high risk but we have a PM. This is our INDIA ! and it can happen only in INDIA
