  • Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had a separate code of conduct drawn up for his aides during the campaigning period. He told them that none of his speeches should contain a single promise. His instructions were to have his speeches filled with details of his government’s performance, with a small fraction as the response to personal attacks against him. He even removed mention of a programme to rejuvenate the irrigation systems in Punjab in one of his speeches. On another occasion, he removed mention of a vocational programme for the youth. Interestingly, Singh had also coined a slogan of his own with help of his aides: “Sammanit Jawan, Khushaal Kisan, Vidwaan Naujawan”. But the slogan did not get much traction as Congress preferred “Jai Ho” and “Bharat Buland”.
